BB39 – Home Is Where The Heart Is

For the 39th blog banter, Seismic Stan poses the question,

“Some say a man’s home is his castle. For others it is wherever they lay their hat. The concept is just as nebulous in the New Eden sandbox.

In EVE Online, what does the concept of “home” mean to you?”

For myself, home in EVE has changed several times as I have played, as I expect is true for many others. For a while, it was just where I was basing out of at the time – Sinq Laison, and the Ambrye constellation in particular, was my first home.

Fairly soon, though, I had a second home – the corp I was in held mining and mission ops on alternating weekends in a certain area of Minmatar highsec, and I slowly began accumulating ships and gear there – and as I got more involved in incursions and took up a more nomadic lifestyle, it quickly became my primary home – the place I went to share experiences with my corpmates and other friendlies.

Even when some of us formed a new corp to live in w-space, we made it a point to continue attending the weekend ops for that sense of community. This proved to be the undoing of our w-space ambitions, as the logistics of our regular weekend trips to and from highsec meant we almost never had enough people online and in the hole to actually do anything.

When that fact finally became undeniable, we began making plans to move out of the hole  – and when two consecutive “moving out” ops got two chains leading to the same island of highsec in the Amarr/Minmatar warzone, the decision of where to move was made for us.

By this time, we had absorbed most of the active players from the old corp, and so we moved the weekend ops to the pocket. I loved living in the pocket; barely anybody else lived there, so the rocks were nice and fat, and the exploration sites plentiful. We even had to put up a POS because there were no stations with manufacturing slots there. Despite the fact that it was highsec, it felt like living on the frontier – and in a way, I suppose it was. We moved out of the pocket when we got an offer from another friend to join Ushra’Khan as our own corp and go live in nullsec, and decided the offer was too good to pass up, but even there I never got quite the same sense that we were building a home to live in. Possibly that’s because we weren’t in U’K for very long before it got kicked out of Geminate, and then out of Etherium Reach, around which point we decided to leave – but whatever the reason, it never really felt like home.

We’re back in highsec now, most of us back in Minmatar space, though a different section of it than before, and I’m back to roaming the stars, fighting the fleets of Sansha Kuvakei. But while I could point to a system I might now call “home,” I think the real truth of it is that home is where my friends and corpmates are.
